Carnival Valor Western Caribbean Cruise, Jamaica

Carnival Valor Western Caribbean Cruise, Jamaica

As much as we loved the other ports, Jamaica was by far our favorite. We had the most relaxing and fun day we’d had our entire cruise. We had done and seen so much at the other ports that it was incredible to just lay on the beach, snorkel, sail, and have our Pina Coladas brought to us whenever we wanted a refill! And we wanted them often!

We’d heard so many mixed opinions on Jamaica and I was excited to find out which would be our experience. The negative things I’d heard ranged from marijuana being offered and smelling it all over the island, to being hit up by beggars every fifty paces. Well, sadly, we didn’t get any of that. I say sadly because I love quirky experiences. Like the time when I was 16 and my ex-husband (who was still a boyfriend at the time) and I went do to Nogalas, Mexico and a guy at the local flea market offered to trade my ex-husband “10 blankets for your girl”! The whole time he was tugging my arm and pointing to his blankets and shouting ” Ten! You choose, Meester”. My parents were completely freaked out, but my ex-husband and I thought it was hysterical!

Anyway, David and I didn’t smell any pot but we did have a funny experience as we were getting off ship. Just as we disembarked, like every other port, we were greeted by crew members with cameras offering to take our picture with a badly stereotyped local. In Jamaica we were met by a Rastafarian so we allowed the ships crew to take a picture of us with him. Just as we were walking away, he grabbed David’s arm and said “When you come back, Mon, as a friend, I ask you to give me your shoes. As a friend, Mon, yes?” David looked down at his favorite sandals and told him he couldn’t give them to him because they were the only pair he’d brought with us. I couldn’t help but laugh as the guy just kept saying, “aw, com’on, Mon, as a friend I ask. You give me your shoes, yes?” David finally told him sternly that it just wasn’t going to happen, and we heard him say “no worries, Mon, no worries” as we walked away. We laughed about it the rest of the day, and I’m sure the Pina Coladas made it even funnier.

The excursion we chose was all inclusive and covered lunch, adult beverages, and water sports. The food was fantastic and consisted of traditional Jamaican fare as well as grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, fresh fruit and veggies, salads, and deserts. They had large grills set up and cooked the whole afternoon. The pool had a bar in the center of it, and you could swim right up and sit down. I’ll admit I was a regular.

Everything about the place was wonderful, including the staff. They were all very friendly and so much fun. The D.J kept the island music and reggae pumping and even hosted some fun music games. I proudly won a couple bottles of Jamaican Rum that we brought home with us.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day in Jamaica or an end to our cruise. Heading back to Miami, we had one more Fun Day at Sea and enjoyed it just relaxing on deck. That evening I packed and prepared for our disembarkation the following day.

Overall, this was one of the best vacations we’ve had. We loved all of the ports and customer service onboard was exceptional. Our room steward was second to none, and the Carnival Valor was absolutely beautiful. We will be back on her in Sept, this time out of Puerto Rico, and I know we’ll have another wonderful vacation.
